EUGENE "SMOKEY" PLEACHER & RESONATOR GUITAR, MINSTREL MUSIC CARD

Description

This is a very interesting & rare original card which shows "Smokey" the musician holding his resonator guitar. Smokey was a white man who is shown on this card in minstrel makeup. Smokey was Eugene "Smokey" Pleacher who was well known and a featured performer with the WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia. The card measures 6 1/8 inches by 3 11/16 inches. The card was made with a facsimile printed signature of "Smokey" at the bottom right. This card is NOT a photo. The card is a half tone print made from a photo.
This card is from a collection of items connected with country music performers. The collection was put together by Bessie Auten from approximately 1942 to 1955 when she worked at the Radio Corral near Williamsport, Pa. Radio Corral was a series of outdoor weekend country music performances run by Jim and Jane Claar in the forties and by Dean and Bob McNett in the fifties. Many country music legends of the time performed at Radio Corral. The Claars and then later the McNetts also produced radio programs of country music.
This card would have been acquired directly by Bessie from Smokey when he played there on the radio station.
This card has three tiny light surface wrinkles. There is a tiny scuff on the surface at the top right corner & there is minor wear to the corner tips. The pics clearly show the condition.
