Description
Here is a very unusual radio antenna from the 20s or 30s, the Puretone Woven Antenna in its original box, made by the Lees Textile Company of Lowell, MA.This antenna was for indoor use, and was a ribbon consisting of 14 brass (?) flat conductors woven together into a ribbon with a crimped-on connector at one end where it was connected to the radio. The ribbon is about 3/8 inches wide, and the box says it's 100 feet long. This could be strung around a room in various ways, run up into the attic, or hidden under a rug.
The box is 4 inches square, and 1/2 inch thick.
There is at least one break in the ribbon, I unwound it to that point, but went no further. I can not guarantee that there are no other breaks. There is a color difference, darker toward the center. I don't know why that is, but the color changes about where the break is. The instructions on the back of the box mention using different lengths, so that may explain the break.
Make no mistake, this ribbon is very fragile from age and will tear easily. The connector is very close to detaching. If it does, you would have to spread it apart, insert the ribbon, and recrimp it.
Because of its fragility, you should just leave it in the box and not attempt to use it. I doubt these worked any better than an ordinary wire, but they looked cool, so people bought them believing the hype. Very few have survived to this day.
The box is complete including all flaps, but has wear and yellowing from age. There are several minor tears (3/8 to 1/2 inch). There is what I assume is insect damage (by silverfish, the bane of all paper collectors) here and there on the outer surfaces that shows as lighter spots.
Thank you for looking!
